Petroleum Environmental, Health and Safety Manager
Course Description
The Petroleum Environmental, Health and Safety Manager (PEHSM) course is an advanced professional certification program designed for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) managers, refinery professionals, process safety specialists, engineers, operations managers, compliance officers, supervisors, and professionals working in the petroleum, petrochemical, oil and gas, and energy industries. This comprehensive course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to develop, implement, and continuously improve Process Safety Management (PSM) systems while ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and industry best practices.
Petroleum refining and chemical processing facilities operate with highly hazardous chemicals, flammable liquids, combustible gases, pressurized systems, and complex industrial processes that require effective risk management. This certification prepares participants to identify process hazards, prevent catastrophic incidents, protect employees and the environment, and maintain regulatory compliance through comprehensive safety and environmental management systems.
Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) 29 CFR 1910.119, Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS), Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) guidelines, process hazard analysis (PHA), HAZOP studies, What-If Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Management of Change (MOC), mechanical integrity, operating procedures, contractor safety, emergency planning and response, incident investigation, compliance auditing, environmental protection, and continuous improvement strategies. The curriculum also covers refinery process safety, hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, permit-to-work systems, and safety leadership.
Using real-world refinery case studies, practical exercises, and industry scenarios, participants will learn how to evaluate process safety risks, conduct hazard analyses, implement PSM and RBPS elements, investigate incidents, perform compliance audits, and improve operational reliability. The course emphasizes proactive risk management, regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence across petroleum and petrochemical facilities.
Upon successful completion of the Petroleum Environmental, Health and Safety Manager (PEHSM) course, participants will possess the expertise to lead comprehensive safety, health, environmental, and process safety programs that reduce operational risks, improve OSHA compliance, strengthen environmental performance, and promote a culture of continuous improvement throughout petroleum and energy operations.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Petroleum Environmental, Health and Safety Manager (PEHSM) course, participants will be able to:
Understand OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) 29 CFR 1910.119 requirements and their application in petroleum, refinery, and petrochemical operations.
Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) using HAZOP, What-If Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and other recognized risk assessment methodologies.
Implement and manage critical PSM elements, including operating procedures, Management of Change (MOC), mechanical integrity, contractor safety, and emergency planning.
Apply Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) principles developed by the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) to improve operational reliability.
Identify process safety hazards involving flammable liquids, hazardous chemicals, pressure systems, confined spaces, and energy isolation.
Conduct compliance audits, incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Develop and maintain environmental, health, and safety management systems that support OSHA and environmental regulatory compliance.
Strengthen refinery and petroleum safety performance through proactive risk management, leadership, and continuous improvement.
Maintain documentation, performance metrics, and compliance records required for PSM and EHS management systems.
Promote a strong safety culture focused on process safety, environmental protection, employee health, and operational excellence.
