Course Description

The Certified HAZWOPER Training Specialist (CHTS) course is designed for safety professionals, environmental health and safety (EHS) personnel, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) technicians, supervisors, emergency responders, and industrial workers responsible for hazardous waste operations and emergency response activities. This comprehensive training provides an in-depth understanding of OSHA HAZWOPER regulations (29 CFR 1910.120) and equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely identify, evaluate, and control hazardous workplace conditions.

The course covers the core principles of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), including hazardous materials identification, chemistry and toxicology fundamentals, exposure assessment, risk evaluation, and emergency incident command procedures. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the physical and health hazards associated with hazardous substances and learn how to apply effective engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize worker exposure and maintain regulatory compliance.

In addition to hazard recognition and emergency response planning, students will learn best practices for site characterization, work zone establishment, decontamination procedures, medical surveillance awareness, and incident reporting. Practical exercises and real-world scenarios reinforce safe work practices and prepare participants to respond effectively to hazardous materials incidents while protecting personnel, property, and the environment.

Upon successful completion, graduates will have the knowledge and confidence to support OSHA-compliant HAZWOPER programs, conduct workplace hazard assessments, improve emergency preparedness, and strengthen environmental, health, and safety performance across industrial, construction, environmental, and hazardous waste operations.
